MARÍA SOSA
MORELIA, MEXICO, 1985. LIVES AND WORKS IN CDMX
María Sosa’s work stems from research into the pre-Columbian past, with an emphasis on the moment of contact between the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and Europeans.
She explores how this historical moment shaped the structural foundation of today’s reality. Sosa borrows methodologies from anthropological and historical research to construct her own artistic research methodology, which employs observation as its main tool, combining archaeological and historical study with material practice. She conceives of history as a sculptural material whose capacity to be shaped allows for direct intervention in the present.
María Sosa maps the phenomenon of conquest, bringing into focus the cultural and social consequences that emerged from it—consequences that also resonate within the context of contemporary art.
Recently, the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL) announced that the collective RojoNegro, formed by artists María Sosa and Noé Martínez, will represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale in 2026.
